Over a century ago a British born inventor and stargazer built a stunning Victorian era conservatory to house his exotic collection of plants and telescopes for stargazing. The conservatory was built with eight sides and a high ceiling and has resided in the Sunnyside neighborhood of San Francisco since the late 1800’s.
During the buildings past 40 years, vandalism had left the buildings in disrepair. This along with the threat by a contractor to level the site and build an apartment complex in its place convinced residents of the Sunnyside neighborhood to purchase the property. Over the next decade or so the neighbors, along with preservationists and city officials, have resurrected the conservatory and the historic site has become part of the San Francisco Parks and Recreation Department.
The newly reconstructed conservatory is located at 236 Monterey Boulevard in San Francisco and is open from dawn to dusk. For more information regarding the Sunnyside Conservatory visit www.sunnysideconservatory.org.
