Muir Woods, Rethinking the Way We Eat

Apr
30 2009

Summer travellers visiting Muir Woods will be able to feel good about what they consume from the concession stand in the park this year. This is because a new owner will be reopening the remodeled and health conscious snack bar in early May. The famous national redwood park made a public request for business plans last year with the intention of creating a health and environmentally conscious concession stand. This will be the first green stand of its kind associated with the National Park Service which hopes to spread this responsible practice throughout the rest of the country. The winning business plan was crated by a New Mexico based Ortega Enterprises and will rename the concession stand Muir Woods Trading Co.

Muir Woods located adjacent to Marin County, which is where organic farming has really grown in popularity, is a perfect area to test a new sustainable business practice. In order to adhere to sustainable practices more than half of the food served will be grown in Marin and 80 percent of that food will be shipped less than 60 miles. All utensils and paper products will be biodegradable and recyclable and will follow the principle of minimizing all long-term effects on the environment.
