The Walt Disney Concert hall is located at 111 Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles. The Disney Concert hall is the fourth hall of the Los Angeles Music Center and seats 2,265 people. The hall serves as home to the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Los Angeles Master Chorale. The initial funds for the building of the concert hall were donated by Lillian Disney in 1987, as a gift to the city of Los Angeles and in honor of Walt Disney's devotion to the arts and the city.
The building was designed by architect Frank Gehry and the acoustics were designed by Yasuhisa Toyota. Both designs earned the hall great praise as a world renowned concert venue. Toyota's acoustic design called for Douglas fir ceilings and walls and oak floors which create an amazing sound for both listeners and musicians. The construction on the Disney Concert Hall was completed in the spring of 2003, but the grand opening was postponed until the fall to give choristers and musicians adequate time to adjust to the new building. The grand opening of the Walt Disney Concert Hall took place October 23, 2003 with a concert by the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Today the Walt Disney Concert Hall hosts many concerts and performances including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Los Angeles Master Chorale, intimate special performance, ballet and concerts from many other genres. Music enthusiasts are offered many membership, ticketing and educational options as well.
