San Francisco prides itself on it’s variety of culture. Theater, fine dining, museums, all of it is located within the San Francisco city limits. And central to the concept of culture is a good general knowledge of wine. San Francisco has a growing number of wine tasting establishments, and wine tours. SF even has tours that go all the way to wine country to give visitors a taste of world-class wine straight form the source.
San Francisco's wine tasting rooms offer a wide selection of wines, and not just from California’s own vineyards. Tasting rooms, which usually offer dinner with a tasting, are a lovely way to spend a quiet night getting to know a little more about wine. Perfect for every level of wine drinker, from the Safeway buyer, to the European connoisseur, San Francisco wine tastings are fun, friendly, and wildly informative. Rooms like the Wattle Creek Wine Tasting Room, located at Ghirardelli Square offer that San Francisco feel partnered with a bottle of good wine. Wattle Creek is an Australian wine company, open seven days a week to your wine needs. Wine rooms often also allow for parties to hold an event at the venue. If you have a birthday or an anniversary coming up and you’re in San Francisco, a small dinner at a wine bar is a fun and classy way to celebrate. Some venues, like Vino Venue on SF’s Mission Street offer classes during the day as well, so that beginners can learn to pair wines with complementary foods, and distinguish different types of wine. The great thing about wine tasting rooms is you don’t have to have that fancy, expensive meal. As any wine bar will tell you, the right wine will go with anything, from pizza to salmon. As San Francisco’s industry continues to thrive, local developers are looking to increase wine tasting establishments. San Francisco’s business set want to have a good time as well, and wine bars are perfect for a relaxed night imbibing a little culture along with good wine. In SF’s SoMA district, there is a wine tasting venue planned, to be located under the Four Seasons Hotel, called Press Club. It will a sprawling wine bar or top notch design and decoration replete with a food bar, and it is going to handle wines from a number of vineyards. Opening is planned for 2008, and will be a chance for both the wine snob and the wine beginner to spend time learning more about, and enjoying, high quality wines.
San Francisco wine tours are fun and comprehensive, and well-priced. Taking a wine tour is a better idea than driving up to Napa or Sonoma , because there is a designated driver, so you can relax and explore your wine palate without worry. San Francisco wine tours, like Extranomical tours, are unique, because they combine the wine country experience with small details of San Francisco life that no one else can give you. You get to see parts of San Francisco to complement your tour of wine country. Longer tours will be able to take you to all three wine country regions in California, which are nestled fairly close to each other. An all day tour will allow you to see Napa Valley, Sonoma Valley , and Carneros, and visit 3 or 4 wineries at each one. If you only have an afternoon to spare, choose a shorter tour that will take you to Carneros, or one of the other two areas. Carneros is closest to the city, so it’s probably the best choice if you have limited time. Carneros is also world-famous for its sparkling wine and highly respected for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Tours are also a good way to meet people, because they are usually taken on vans or minibuses that hold 12 to 24 people. Or if you prefer a more intimate tour, it is usually possible to book a private charter tour.
Wine tasting bars and wine tours are a perfect way to see different parts of the city of San Francisco, and to get to know about SF culture and life outside of the typical tourist spots.
