Sex in the city tour about safe-sexual history

This tour contains Adult Content and is not suitable for persons under 21 years of age.

The Sex in the City tour is for mature people of almost all ages, nationalities and lifestyles who would enjoy learning about San Francisco's sexual history and culture, and seeing the exciting city where so many boundaries have been stretched and broken. From the sailors and gold-digging Forty-niner miners that founded the city in 1849 and the sex workers and madams digging that gold out of their pockets, to the recent same-sex marriages at City Hall that made news around the world, this tour will touch them all - but only after asking permission first!

We travel through time and the neighborhoods of San Francisco while you hear stories of the first few decades of gold fever, wild days and wilder nights on the “Barbary Coast” (named after the home of hard-living pirates half a world away), in Chinatown, and in the corrupt mayor’s office. Then we’ll jump ahead about 50 years to the counter cultural revolutions of the Beatniks, Hippies, meditators, commune-ists, and other participants in the flower-power, free-love, and human potential movements who populated San Francisco in the 1950’s through the 60’s, 70’s and – well – until today, really. You’ll visit the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood and Golden Gate Park where the hippies congregated and started communes and group “marriages”. And we’ll make several stops along the way to break things up – an antique vibrator museum and store and the night club strip where exotic dancing started its return to the public stages after a long dormancy. And we don’t leave out our alternative lifestyle-living brethren and sisteren. We’ll take a drive through the Castro neighborhood where the Gay-rights movement took hold in the seventies and transformed American politics, or at least is attempting to! We’ll tell you about the Folsom Street Festival and the Exotic Erotic Ball, huge parties celebrating the wilder side of the sexual spectrum.

Some people (we’ll call prudes) believe sex is only for making babies. This tour is not for everyone, especially them. But if you have an open mind and can talk about sex without thinking dark thoughts or punishing yourself, then you should have a good time learning about the sexy San Francisco you’ve heard so much about. Heck, even if you want to punish yourself, we won’t judge you as long as you keep it UN-real – ‘cause it’s all about playing and acting, right? This tour takes an attitude of irreverent respect toward the subject matter, celebrating humanity’s natural procreative impulses creatively, and respectful of diversity in orientation and lifestyle.

A note to you Bay Area residents: When your friends from somewhere else come into town, do they not ask a bunch of breathless questions about San Francisco that may be beyond your knowledge base or even embarrassing? What better way to keep them entertained and get yourself a little education about the other side of the spectrum, eh? And do I need to mention the potential for bachelorette parties? Go find that button and click it. When you are done, come back here and Book Now!

Highlights (or 'Lowlights' to some, I suppose!)

  • Hear stories about the Gold Rush when there were 100 men for every 1 woman in San Francisco.
  • Take a few photos and pick up some souvenirs for a presentation back at the office guaranteed to get you that big promotion!
  • Visit the Haight-Ashbury and Golden Gate Park neighborhood where the sexual revolution began during the “Summer of Love”.
  • Visit the antique vibrator museum and sex toy shop.
  • Hear how the famous Cable Cars turned a woman into a slave of her desires!
  • Take a drive down the ironically-named Maiden Lane

Hey! This tour is not a rolling bedroom!
The seats do not fold down, and there’s not enough room for – oh, forget it - you can go to the sex club after the tour, or get a room.  We do not provide partners, and for couples traveling together, we’re done by dinner time so there’s plenty of time for whatever whenever.

History of Sex in San Francisco

The little village once named Yerba Buena (good herb!) has been on America’s social and sexual frontier since 1848, despite its founding as the Catholic Mission de San Francisco de Assisi in 1776 (some would say BECAUSE of it!). The would-be-miners who arrived in 1849 were all male, an imbalance that created an economic incentive for certain, shall we say, 'job openings' to be quickly filled with female entrepreneurs and their male “assistants”. When they talk about the Wild West, this was what they were talking about.

Things became wilder and wildly corrupted until the great earthquake, which shook every institution to its foundations. While cleaning up the rubble, the city also cleaned up much of city government and there was a general clamp down on drinking and other vices, ultimately becoming Prohibition (of alcohol) nationwide, and of prostitution and gambling locally. About 50 years later, the social “movements” like the local Beats, the Hippies in Haight-Ashbury, and the Human Potential movement from Berkeley to Big Sur and Stinson Beach, put sex and sexual politics on the front pages. San Francisco has been in the forefront of Gay Liberation and LGBT rights since the 1970’s, with large numbers of activists continuing to advance the cause of rights and respect for people of all orientations and lifestyles. Perhaps unknown to some, there is a movement here termed “Sex Positive”, wherein people enjoy sex, aren’t ashamed of it, use it to enhance the lives of both (or multiple) parties involved, and exploitation is frowned upon or eliminated. In the San Francisco Bay Area, it’s been non-stop evolution of the culture and perception of sex for over 50 years.
